The point of this rant is to for new/established models & new/established photographers to alwaysimprove themselves or you will left in the dust by those that are more committed than you- Mischief Madness
So I am about to go on a rant about something that comes up on a daily basis when it comes to this
industry-The issue I will be discussing is about who gets paid.
I understand everyone wants to get paid for the work they do but sometimes the people who are ones always demanding payment are also the ones who bring nothing new to the table.
I have been modeling for the last four years and in the time I have started modeling I have also invested
countless hours a day on social media and thousands of dollars to add to my appearance. I work out, I
look good, I take care of my body, and I network my ass off to be able to find new opportunities. I am
always improving myself to make myself worth while for photographers to hire me.
I have seen models looking for paid work when they have not even put the work in to make themselves
worth the money for a photographer to hire. A model has to always work on their social media
following and appearance, otherwise who are you and what makes you unique?
Just because you are cute and know how to pose does not mean you should try to charge every photographer that hits you up for a shoot. I even still consider trade if there is mutual grounds we can agree on, if the photographer has a good following, or if the photographer produces stunning images.
A few things that bother me are 1) When models are looking for paid work but in the same post write
how they don’t have a car and will need a ride or that don’t have anything to wear for the shoot! 2) When a
model cuts her prices to a ridiculous amount where she is shooting for 14 hours for a measly $100!
This kind of behavior is insulting when amateurs models do not take themselves seriously enough to
improve on their craft to make themselves worthwhile paying for or by undercutting the prices of the
professional. The world is being filled with mediocracy and self-proclaimed models who take nothing
This type of model brings nothing to the table and makes it harder for professional models
to get work.
Now onto photographers…
If a photographer is trying to get their name out into the world, the best way to go about it is to hire a
professional model with a good following to help promote your business- In this case the photog should
pay the model. It is vice versa, meaning the model should pay the photographer if the photog is
established. Photographers and models should be more open to negotiations. I still do plenty of trade
but may ask for additional exclusive content for my website, or ask to have HMUA and wardrobe
provided. There are endless options to negotiate with!
Photographers that are only wanting paid assignments should have updated work for people to see
somewhere to attract new potential clients. I understand many hobby photographers have jobs where
they have to keep their work secret but if a photographer claims to be a professional photographer for a
living but with no updated work then be wary! It throws me off when I have a supposed “professional
photographer” who does not shoot trade offering me a TF shoot without any updated content to their
The point of this rant is to for new/established models & new/established photographers to always
improve themselves or you will left in the dust by those that are more committed than you; value their
time but have a balance to know who you charge for it and who you trade, and value the craft as well as
being considerate of others as well who are trying to make it just like you.
